Public Works receives team award from state association

RELEASE DATE: June 26, 2007

TAVARES — Employees of the Lake County Department of Public Works received a team award earlier this month from the Florida Association of County Engineers and Road Superintendents (FACER) for their effort in completing the special-assessment project at the Hilltop-Sorrento neighborhood in October 2006.

The project included a double-surface treatment for five dirt or sand roads in the neighborhood (Shetland Trail from County Road 437 to Gere Lane, Welsh Trail from Shetland Trail to the end, Appaloosa Trail from Shetland Trail to Palamino Trail, Thoroughbred Trail from Olmac Road to the end, and Gere Lane from Shetland Trail to the end). The Department began the project in 2006 by requesting bids. The lowest bid received from a contractor was for more than $1 million.

"Since this amount was not acceptable, we looked at the possibility of having our Road Operations Division bid the job to be done in-house," said Jim Stivender, Director of the Department of Public Works.

The bid received from the Road Operations Division was for $607,000, but the project actually came in under the bid costing $575,000, a savings of more than $30,000. The amount saved over the original bid from the contractor was more than $480,000.

A collective effort from various divisions and sections in the department helped make this project a reality. The team consisted of personnel from the Road Operations Division, Right of Way Section, Special Assessment Section and Engineering Division. Team members that were recognized at Florida Association of Counties Annual Conference at the Renaissance Orlando Resort are:

Road Operations Division — Frank Ashburn, Stephen Cantley, Morgan Cates, Frank Franklin, Steven Harris, Robert Romine, Gary Spires, Gary Steverson, Marlin Stewart, Elbert Welch, Todd Croteau, John Bringard, Dennis Warren, Karen Burt and Kristian Swenson

Right of Way Section — Patti Harker and Vicki Kochevar

Special Assessments Section — Janet Schwellenger

Engineering Division — Fred Schneider, Phil Maggio, Tony Quattrocki and Paul Proctor
