TAVARES — The Lake County Extension Office is offering a new osteoporosis series, titled "Build Your Bones," to interested business and organizations.
The educational series is offered in either one 3-hour block or four 1-hour classes held once a week. Julie England, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent with the Lake County Extension Office, teaches the workshop.
"I'm really trying to find interested groups," England said. "The Lake County wellness program and the City of Mount Dora have shown interest, but I want to reach as many residents as possible. You're never too young or old to improve your bone health."
Osteoporosis is a leading cause of disability among women and men. Fifty percent of women and 25 percent of men over age 50 will have a bone fracture caused by osteoporosis in their lifetime. There is no cure, so prevention is essential to combat this disease.
Some of the topics covered during the workshop are:
• How to prevent osteoporosis
• Risk factors, both heredity and lifestyle
• Medications and conditions that may cause osteoporosis
• Medications to prevent and treat osteoporosis
• How nutrition and exercise build strong bones
