RELEASE DATE: June 1, 2007

The Lake County Code Enforcement Division recently introduced a new cargo trailer that will be used for enforcement purposes and in neighborhood cleanup initiatives.

In addition, the trailer will be used countywide for removal of illegal signs and other right-of-way obstructions. An illegal sign is generally one that is placed in the County right of way. According to Section 14.14.03 (A) of the Lake County Land Development Regulations, "The erection, alteration, or reconstruction of any building, shed or structure, including signs, shall not be commenced without a Building Permit. Signs shall be not be placed in the Right-of-Way."

"We've picked up almost 1,000 pounds of signs with the trailer so far," said Tommy Leathers, Director of the Code Enforcement Division. "Before we had an old pick-up for sign detail, but that wasn't a good deal. One day we picked up more than 200 pounds of signs and we couldn't even get the tailgate to close because there were so many signs in there."

In addition, the Code Enforcement Division will work with the Lake County Department of Community Services, Community Enhancement Area Partnership Program, to use the trailer for neighborhood cleanups in blighted areas of the county that are scheduled for revitalization.

"The cargo trailer will be visible to all citizens of Lake County wherever the Code Enforcement team is working and it will be a symbol of services that are being provided by Lake County," Leathers said.
