Annual Elder Symposium to feature keynote speaker Jake Vest

RELEASE DATE: August 23, 2007

MOUNT DORA — The Lake County Elder Affairs Coordinating Council is hosting the Fourth Annual Elder Symposium on Friday, Sept. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lake Receptions, located at 4425 Highway 19A, in Mount Dora.

The annual symposium addresses senior issues in Lake County. This year’s theme is “The Power of Awareness and Choice.” A full agenda of dynamic speakers will present a variety of topics promoting safety for seniors, including:

Keynote speaker Jake Vest — Vest is a veteran journalist of 30 years and has been a nationally syndicated cartoonist, a local columnist and a highly sought after speaker. He will be sharing his opinions and observations with respect to aging and retirement. Each attendee will receive a free autographed copy of "Just Another Baptist in Baghdad: Inside Views of a Natural Born Outsider."

Detective Corporal Ronald A. Broomes of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office — Broomes is assigned to the economic crimes section of the Criminal Investigation Unit as a fraud investigator and will be speaking about scams, fraud and identity theft. He has been in law enforcement for the past 12 years and has worked for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for the past three years.

Selma Sauls of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles — Sauls will present a specialized program geared toward older adults describing what they should know about aging and driving. The goals of the Florida GrandDriver program includes promoting driving safety and ways to enhance driving ability.

Eric C. Millhorn of The Millhorn Law Firm — A substantial portion of the firm’s practice focuses on wills, trusts, probate and estate planning. Millhorn will discuss the topics of probate, living wills, durable power of attorney and Medicaid planning.

Registration is required for the Fourth Annual Elder Symposium. The cost of the event is $10 for individuals or $20 for professionals. The cost of admission includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
