TAVARES —The Lake County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday declaring Sept. 24 as National Family Day in Lake County.
Family Day is a national effort to promote parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce substance abuse in children and teenagers, and to raise healthier children. According to research by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, children from families that eat together five to seven times a week are three times less likely to use illegal drugs, tobacco or alcohol.
"Parents who remain involved with their children's activities greatly prevent them from using tobacco, alcohol or drugs," said Commissioner Debbie Stivender. "Eating dinner as a family is an important step toward raising drug- and alcohol-free children."
