Extension Office offers 2-part osteoporosis prevention program

RELEASE DATE: October 17, 2007

TAVARES — The Lake County Extension Office is offering a two-part osteoporosis prevention program, titled "Build Your Bones," on Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares.

Julie England, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent with the Lake County Extension Office, will teach the educational program. Osteoporosis is a leading cause of disability among women and men. Fifty percent of women and 25 percent of men over age 50 will have a bone fracture caused by osteoporosis in their lifetime. There is no cure for osteoporosis; therefore, prevention is essential to combat this disease.

Some of the topics covered during the two-part program are:
  • How to prevent osteoporosis
  • Risk factors, both heredity and lifestyle
  • Medications and conditions that may affect bone health
  • Practical to steps for improving bone health
  • How nutrition and exercise build strong bones
