TAVARES — The Lake County Board of County Commissioners at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday recognized a group of doctors that graciously volunteer their time in the We Care of program.
Established in 1994, We Care of Lake County provides referrals for specialty care to disadvantaged residents. While the not-for-profit organization provides the referral service, volunteer physicians accept and treat the referral patients. More than 125 physicians currently volunteer with We Care of Lake County.

"The physicians that volunteer do not benefit monetarily, but they gain the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the less fortunate members of our community," said Commission Chairman Welton Cadwell. "Since the program's inception, volunteering physicians have contributed nearly $6 million in service."
Individuals attending the presentation ceremony included Dr. Philip Dascher with Lake Surgical Associates of Tavares, Dr. Hal Jacobson with InterCommunity Cancer Center of Leesburg and Lady Lake, Dr. Gottfried Jean-Louis with Neurological Care Center of Clermont, Dr. Chad Watkins of Florida Musculoskeletal Institute of Leesburg and Chris Thorpe with Lake Medical Imaging of Leesburg.
The Board of County Commissioners has committed $75,000 in funding to We Care of Lake County for this fiscal year. For more information about We Care of Lake County, call Executive Director Andrea Payne, at (352) 742-6595.
