State of the County presentation includes induction of two new members into the Women's Hall of Fame

RELEASE DATE: November 13, 2007

TAVARES — The Lake County Board of County Commissioners held its annual State of the County presentation on Tuesday which included the induction of two new members into the Lake County Women's Hall of Fame.

Inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame were Antoinette "Minnie" Viti of Clermont and Barbara Mittermaier of Leesburg. Created by the Board of County Commissioners in 1995, 23 inspiring women and outstanding community leaders are now enshrined into this Hall of Fame.

Viti began her volunteer service at South Lake Hospital before 1959 and was the first and only treasurer for the hospital's auxiliary from May 1959 to April 2002. For 43 years, she maintained the same Monday morning shift from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. She continues to serve as an active member of the South Lake Hospital Volunteer Services. Viti has donated more than 37,000 hours of service to South Lake Hospital, the equivalent of 18 years of service. In 2004, the Hospital District Board of Trustees and Directors recognized Viti as a founding Healthcare Legacy honoree for her distinguished record of voluntary service to health care in the community. She is only one of four individuals — and the only woman — to be bestowed with this honor.

Mittermaier's business career spanned 37 years with experience in commercial real estate, medical associations and medical practices. In 1989, she became the administrator of the Lake Centre for Orthopaedics.

In 1991, she was elected to the Board of Directors for the Leesburg Chamber of Commerce, served as an ambassador and was named the only honorary ambassador in the chamber upon her retirement in 2004. In addition to her illustrious business career, Mittermaier served on numerous executive boards for local charitable organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club, United Way of Lake & Sumter Counties, Altrusa International of Lake County, Haven and PALS. She has also served on the board of the Lake-Sumter Community College Foundation and the Lake County Cultural Affairs Council.

"This is probably the greatest honor I have ever received," Mittermaier said. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Also receiving awards at the State of the County presentation were not-for profit visual and performing arts organizations of Lake County (Leesburg Center for the Arts, Mount Dora Center for the Arts, Lake Eustis Museum of Art, Florida Lakes Symphony, Melon Patch Players, Young Performing Artists, Bay Street Players, Moonlight Players and IceHouse Players).

"Following the theme for this year's State of the County and Annual Report — 'A Picture of Success' — it seems appropriate for us to recognize the not-for-profit organizations that introduce culture and art into our community every day," said Commissioner Debbie Stivender.

A tradition since 1994, the State of the County presentation is an opportunity for the Board of County Commissioners to share the highlights and achievements of Lake County Government from the past fiscal year. In addition, the annual report presented at the State of the County event provides the citizens of Lake County a detailed report that reflects the Board’s accomplishments and priorities.
