Decorated tree to honor Lake County veterans

RELEASE DATE: November 20, 2007

TAVARES — A memorial and honor tree was erected today in front of the Historic Courthouse, 317 W. Main Street, Tavares as a tribute to Lake County veterans who have served and are serving in the armed services.

The live 10-foot Leyland Cypress tree, which was donated by Cherry Lake Tree Farms, is decorated with large red bows, white doves and American flags.

The decorations, as well as supplies for maintaining the tree, were donated by Brenda Quattlebaum, Elder Affairs Manager and Allison Thall, Citizens Support Services Director, both with the Department of Community Services, as well as a donation from Publix Supermarkets. Rebecca Foley-Kearney, Children’s Services Manager, joined in to help with the decorating.

“Having this tree stationed between the Honor Wall and the doughboy statue is a fitting location because it symbolizes all Lake County veterans,” Quattlebaum said, “This is our way of giving something back to show our thanks to the troops and all that they have done and are doing.

The tree will be on display in the courtyard of the Historic Courthouse until Friday, Jan. 4, 2008.
