TAVARES — At its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners made a special request for local individuals to apply for the two remaining seats to the newly created Transportation Alternative Funding Task Force.
County Commissioners are urging applicants to file by Monday, Dec. 3, as they intend to make the two remaining appointments to the task force at a Dec. 4 meeting. Applicants should have a business background. To apply, individuals need to complete an application form available online at http://www.lakecountyfl.gov/pdfs/Advisory_Board_and_Committees/Advisory_Application.pdf, or at the office of the Board of County Commissioners, located in room 316 of the Lake County Administration Building, 315 W. Main St. in Tavares.
At an Aug. 27 meeting to consider an increase in transportation impact fees, County Commissioners rejected the impact-fee increase but proposed creating a task force to study alternative funding mechanisms for new road improvements. The seven-member Transportation Alternative Funding Task Force was officially created on Sept. 18 when the Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution 2007-145. The resolution outlines four primary responsibilities for the task force:
• Review funding options available to Lake County for improving transportation infrastructure, including funding necessary to provide the transportation improvements identified in the Long Range Transportation Plan.
• Work with the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Lake County Department of Economic Growth and Redevelopment, business and industry groups, local chambers of commerce and citizen groups to assess each funding option.
• Make a report to the Board of County Commissioners as to relative strengths and weaknesses of each funding option.
• Make a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners as to which funding options the Task Force believes are the most sensible to be used to fund transportation infrastructure.
