Employees of Lake County Board of Commissioners get into the gift-giving mood for the holiday season

RELEASE DATE: December 21, 2007

TAVARES — The 910 employees of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners wrapped up efforts Thursday on another successful season of holiday fundraising and gift giving.

Food donations
"The employees charitable actions have culminated in helping hundreds of citizens in the community," said County Manager Cindy Hall. "It's engrained in our culture to give back to the residents we serve, and our employees have shown the knack for holiday giving year after year."

The two holiday donation efforts that Lake County traditionally participates in each year are local food and toy drives. Charitable holiday drives concluded Thursday as employees from the Department of Public Works and volunteers from the Toys for Tots and Giving Toy Box collected dozens of bins full of donated food and toys from County offices.

Coordinating the food collection endeavor were John Giglio, Equipment Operator, Jim Willis, Sign Assistant, and Al Watson, Sign & Striping Technician. The 2,560 pounds of donated food were dropped off at the United Way office in Leesburg for distribution to needy families in the community.

Employees also donated hundreds of toys to The Giving Toy Box, a local toy collection effort in Umatilla, and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots Program. According to Jack Maiz, coordinator for Toys for Tots in Lake, Marion and Sumter counties, the program collected 22,194 toys from the three counties this year to distribute to 7,398 children.

Another new food drive that started last year is the Public Transportation Division's "Stuff the Bus" campaign. County employees volunteered their time on Nov. 17 at the Leesburg and Mount Dora Wal-Mart stores to collect donated food. The 2,122 pounds of nonperishable food collected during the “Stuff the Bus” campaign were donated to the Salvation Army Human Care Network.
