TAVARES — For four years the Lake County Board of County Commissioners have willingly donated properties to Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter and Homes in Partnership Inc. for new affordable housing projects, and the generosity continued into 2008.
The Board unanimously agreed at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday to deed over a .2-acre lot in the Forest Hills Subdivision to Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter. The donation was the 19th — totaling nearly 7 acres — the Board of County Commissioners has made to either of these not-for-profit, home-building organizations.
"Lake County is pleased to donate these lots for the greater good of the communities we serve," said Lake County Commission Chairman Welton Cadwell. "These lots help ensure that those who need it will have affordable new homes in Lake County."
While Lake County began its program to donate properties that were acquired for code enforcement or tax delinquency reasons in 2004, the Florida Legislature required this past year that all counties begin using these type of properties to benefit affordable housing.
"The cost savings [from the land donation] is passed on to the person buying the home so it helps low-income individuals qualify for a home," said Bonnie McCoy, deputy director for Homes in Partnership Inc.
