Lake County Extension Office offers two osteoporosis prevention programs in February

RELEASE DATE: February 1, 2008

TAVARES — The Lake County Extension Office is offering two osteoporosis prevention programs, titled "Build Your Bones," in February.

The first program is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Fruitland Park Library, located at 205 W. Berckman St. To register for the free program, contact the library at (352) 360-6561.

The second program is a two-part series scheduled for Feb. 14 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares. The program costs $5 for materials and supplies. To register for the program, call Rene Bass at (352) 343-4101 or e-mail rcbass@ufl.edu.

Julie England, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent with the Lake County Extension Office, will teach the educational programs. Osteoporosis is a leading cause of disability among women and men. Fifty percent of women and 25 percent of men over 50 will have a bone fracture related to osteoporosis in their remaining lifetime. There is no cure for osteoporosis; therefore, prevention is essential to combat this disease.

Some of the topics covered during the program are:
  • How to prevent osteoporosis
  • Risk factors, both heredity and lifestyle
  • Medications and conditions that may affect bone health
  • Practical to steps for improving bone health
  • How nutrition and exercise build strong bones
