TAVARES — The Lake County Board of County Commissioners unanimously agreed at its scheduled meeting Tuesday to support a new initiative to reduce childhood obesity by the Comprehensive Health Care Committee, a 19-member citizen advisory group that on an ongoing basis addresses health care issues that are identified as affecting Lake County and its citizens.
The "Get Fit Lake" initiative is the brainchild of the health care committee, which created a subcommittee in 2007 to flesh out the idea. Members of the subcommittee include current Comprehensive Health Care Committee members and members of the Lake County Health Department, Lake County Schools, LifeStream Behavioral Center and area hospitals.
The subcommittee has subsequently created an outline for identifying the components of the new initiative. Some of the beginning stages include creating a logo and slogan for Get Fit Lake and creating an independent Web site to act as a clearinghouse for information.
According to organizers of Get Fit Lake, the Web site, www.getfitlake.com, is expected to be up and running this summer. One feature of the Web site will be a collection of fun events and activities that will help children lead healthier lifestyles.
