Additional apparatus join fight in Deerhaven fire

RELEASE DATE: May 21, 2008

LAKE KATHRYN — Units from the Florida Division of Forestry Bunnell and Withlacoochee field units are working to contain the wildfire in northeast Lake County, which is estimated at more than 1,000 acres.

Additional information from the Deerhaven fire (new information in bold):
  • The Lake County Citizens Information Line (352-253-9999) is now open to assist residents.

  • The Lake County Emergency Operations Center, located in the Lake County Administration Building in downtown Tavares, is now activated at a level 2.

  • The Division of Forestry also has two air tankers spreading a fire retardant and several helicopters with water buckets on scene.

  • 25 units and 60 personnel from the fire departments of Lake County, Volusia County, City of Tavares and City of Eustis are on scene.

  • Approximately 40 acres in size as of 2:45 p.m., the brush fire, which originated near the intersection of Jane Lane and County Road 42, is burning east.

  • Public safety officials are encouraging motorists to avoid the area.

  • Residents of the Deerhaven community are currently being evacuated by fire personnel. The homes are not necessarily in danger but the community could be shut off from County Road 42 as the fire approaches Deerhaven Road. A shelter is established at the First Baptist Church of Paisley, located at 25145 Fishermans Road.
