UMATILLA — The Lake County Health Department and the Lake County Board of County Commissioners will celebrate the grand opening of the Umatilla health clinic, located at 249 E. Collins St, on Thursday, June 5, at 9 a.m.
The public is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which will feature speakers Lake County Commission Chairman Welton Cadwell; Pam Steinke, Administrator of the Lake County Health Department; Tom Arnold, Deputy State Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health; and Umatilla Mayor Benita Dixon. Following the ceremony, a community health fair will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. The fair will include free health screenings and activities from a variety of local organizations and agencies.
The $3.6 million project began in May 2007 and included a complete overhaul of the existing 4,600-square-foot structure and adding 11,000 square feet of space. The new facility enables the Lake County Health Department to offer clinical services to the surrounding community, including family health, maternity, immunizations and specialty clinics.
According to health department officials, the new clinic is the first health department building in the state to meet standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. A voluntary program, LEED provides a complete framework for assessing building performance and meeting sustainability goals. Based on well-founded scientific standards, LEED emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
The Umatilla health clinic renovation and expansion project was designed by the Maitland office of Harvard Jolly architects. The construction manager for the project was R.D. Michaels Inc. of Maitland. Added features to the health facility include exam rooms, nursing workstations, storage rooms and a laboratory.
