TAVARES — The Board of County Commissioners is asking the public to nominate outstanding Lake County women to be considered for induction into the Lake County Women’s Hall of Fame.
Nomination forms are available online or at the Board of County Commissioners’ office, room 316 of the Lake County Administration Building, 315 W. Main St., Tavares. Nominations for 2008 must be received by Friday, Aug. 15.
Nominees typically have made significant contributions to improve the quality of life for local citizens and have enhanced the role of women in Lake County. A selection committee of five citizens reviews nominations, and those selected will be honored at the State of the County event in October.
On Nov. 13 of last year, Antoinette "Minnie" Viti of Clermont and Barbara Mittermaier of Leesburg were enshrined into the Lake County Women’s Hall of Fame. The two women became the 22nd and 23rd women selected for the prestigious honor.
Viti began her volunteer service at South Lake Hospital before 1959 and was the first and only treasurer for the hospital's auxiliary from May 1959 to April 2002. For 43 years, she maintained the same Monday morning shift from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. She continues to serve as an active member of the South Lake Hospital Volunteer Services.
Mittermaier's business career spanned 37 years with experience in commercial real estate, medical associations and medical practices. In 1989, she became the administrator of the Lake Centre for Orthopaedics. In 1991, she was elected to the Board of Directors for the Leesburg Chamber of Commerce, served as an ambassador and was named the only honorary ambassador in the chamber upon her retirement in 2004.
Nominations will remain on file for two consecutive years for reconsideration. For more information about the Lake County Women’s Hall of Fame or to have a nomination form mailed out, call (352) 343-9849.
