Germany set to take the stage on July 3 for Lake County 4-H world cultural exploration

RELEASE DATE: July 2, 2008

TAVARES — The free World Cultural Exploration hosted by the Lake County 4-H program continues with a presentation about Germany on Thursday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.

South Lake Connector
African artifacts accompanied Lake County 4-H’s World Cultural Exploration presentation Monday.

The five-day event, geared toward participants 8 to 18 years old, kicked off July 1 with a presentation on Africa. The event included a speaker, who is a native of the continent, a display of artifacts and samplings of common dishes found in Africa, including Suya, beef barbecued on a stick with a unique blend of spices, and Chin Chin, a fried donut-like pastry popular in Nigeria and West Africa.

“Learning about world cultures is something I’m interested, and I think a lot of our local children are interested in it as well,” said Christopher Catanzaro, 4-H Agent with the Lake County Extension Office.

A world traveler and former Peace Corps volunteer for 27 months in Panama, Catanzaro is helping local children take this cultural journey through several countries thanks to a “Youth in Action” grant from Cumberland Farms. The grant helps defray costs for food, handouts, decorations and books raffled off at each event.

The World Cultural Exploration, which is coordinated in cooperation with VolunteerLAKE, consists of music, food, speakers and dress relevant to a featured country, or in the case of July 7, the Peace Corps. Upcoming programs in the World Cultural Exploration include:

• Monday, July 7 — Peace Corps
• Wednesday, July 9 — Asia
• Friday, July 11 — Mediterranean
