MOUNT DORA — LakeXpress, Lake County’s public transportation service, will end its introductory free rides for its circulator route in Mount Dora on Aug. 1.
"There has been great support in the community for the new Mount Dora route," said Ken Harley, Director of the Lake County Public Transportation Division. "By offering free rides during the first month, passengers have been able to get a feel for the new route in the area, which is reflected in the ridership numbers we have received so far."
The Mount Dora circulator, which opened on July 1, is the third route for LakeXpress. Routes 1 and 2 opened a little more than a year ago on May 21. Route 1 runs from The Villages to Eustis, primarily on U.S. Highway 441, and Route 2 circulates in downtown Leesburg.
Since July 21, LakeXpress has averaged more than 590 daily passengers with its highest ridership of 705 recorded on July 25. The fixed-route service is designed to make daily commutes along U.S. Highway 441 hassle free.
LakeXpress operates Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Fares for LakeXpress are $1 for all trips. Half-fares are available for riders 60 years or older, students and individuals with disabilities (buses are equipped with lifts). Free fares are available for children under five years of age, who are accompanied by a fare-paying chaperone.
