TAVARES — The Office of Information Technology has completed implementation of a new phone voice mail system upgrade that allows people in the deaf community who have a Text Telephone (TTY) or a Telephone Device for the Deaf (TDD) compatible phone to communicate with County personnel.
"Making sure that all of our customers have access to contact County personnel is important," said Doug Woodyard, Telecommunications Division Director with the Office of Information Technology. "By implementing this new system, we can now offer enhanced service to the deaf community.”
Users of the new phone system can call (352) 253-1840 and a welcome message will display, followed by a prompt asking “How can we help?” The system lets those that are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired leave a text message on a phone mailbox with their questions or comments. The message is then received by the Telecommunications Division through a TTY reading device that displays the text message, which subsequently is routed to the proper department for handling. The same TTY device enables County personnel to send a response back or correspond live with the original caller.
