Update from the Lake County EOC (Advisory #8)

RELEASE DATE: August 21, 2008

TAVARES — The following is an update from the Lake County Emergency Operations Center (new information in bold):

  • The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an evacuation at Wekiva Falls Park, which is located on Wekiva River Road. There are approximately 100 residences in the neighborhood. The evacuation is due to a private dike breaking along the Wekiva River.

  • A shelter is opening at Round Lake Elementary School, 31333 Round Lake Road, Mount Dora. The shelter is for the general public, special needs and pets.

  • The Lake County Emergency Operations Center is activated at a level II, partial activation.
  • Schools will be closed Friday, Aug. 22.
  • Sand and bags are available at four Lake County fire stations. Residents need to bring their own shovels. Sandbags are limited to 20 per household.
    • Station 10, located at 23023 State Road 40 in Astor
    • Station 14, located at 42700 State Road 19 in Altoona
    • Station 53, located at 2505 Spring Lake Road in Fruitland Park
    • Station 109, located at 11630 Lakeshore Drive in Clermont
  • Emergency Management officials encourage motorists to exercise caution on wet roads. If the road surface is covered by standing water, motorists are asked to turn around. Driving through standing water is dangerous as tires can lose contact with the road and cause hydroplaning. In addition, motorists are encouraged to double the distance they leave between their car and the car in front of them, as wet roads increase stopping distances. If steering becomes unresponsive due to the rain, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.
  • All government offices, Health Department clinics and early voting locations are scheduled to be open Friday, Aug. 22.
  • Lake County’s public transportation system, LakeXpress, and Lake County’s paratransit service, Lake County Connection, are scheduled to be open Friday, Aug. 22.
