10th Annual Leesburg Bikefest to be bigger and better than ever before

RELEASE DATE: April 20, 2006

LEESBURG, FLA. — The 10th Annual Leesburg Bikefest, which is coined as downtown Leesburg’s biggest annual “Party in the Street,” will begin on Friday, April 28, and run through Sunday, April 30.

Attendees to the free event, coordinated by the Leesburg Partnership, will be able to enjoy musical entertainment during 35 concerts at six different stages. A variety of family fun and adult activities will be focused around the “bikers’ world.” Information and a current schedule of events can be found on leesburgbikefest.com.

This year’s festival will be attended by more than 100,000 people from around the country. Headlining entertainment on Friday at 9:30 p.m. will be Leon Russell, whose famous hits include: “Tight Rope,” “Out of the Woods,” “Magic Mirror,” “The Masquerade” and “Queen of the Roller Derby.” On Saturday headlining will be Foghat who is well-known for such hits as “Slow Ride,” “Fool for the City,” “I just want to make love to you” and “Drivin’ Wheel.”

In addition to the Gator Harley-Davidson Towne Square Stage, Budweiser Stage, Lake County Tourism Stage and the Rat’s Hole Stage, two new venues have been added to this year’s line-up. The Opera House Saloon & Dancehall, complete with a full bar, will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday featuring blues and rock ‘n’ roll and The Gator Harley-Davidson Dealership Stage is just 2.5 miles from Historic Downtown Leesburg.

New events this year include “Miss Ratmate,” the Peoples Choice Biker Build-off, Team X-treem and the First Annual Bob Evans pie-eating contest. During the “Miss Ratmate” contest, top area models will compete for the title. This exciting bathing suit competition will take place on the Rat’s Hole Stage starting at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Peoples Choice Biker Build-off is sponsored by Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Shows. Twenty of the coolest custom bikes built by various individuals or bike shops will be on display at The Leesburg Center for the Arts starting Friday. The winners will be determined only by the votes gathered during the Bikefest. Awards will be announced at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Watch as the guys from Team X-treem dazzle the crowd while performing some of the most awesome stunts on motorcycles, show times 2 and 7 p.m. on Friday, 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Spectators will be able to watch as 16 individuals compete for $1,000 in cash and prizes during the First Annual Bob Evans pie-eating contest, taking place at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Bob Evans Stage at Fourth Avenue and Magnolia Street.

Other signature events and activities going on throughout the entire weekend include the 10th Annual Hawaiian Tropic/Ms. Leesburg Bikefest contest at 8 p.m. Friday at the Gator Harley-Davidson Stage in Towne Square. All of the beautiful contestants have been sponsored by local businesses and will compete in swimwear, bike wear and bike poses for the title and cash prize. Take a look at the greatest bikes on display at the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show, competitors are judged in 18 classes including three-wheelers, street racer, antique/classic and most unusual. Winners of the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

During the entire weekend, one can enjoy festive foods, beer and full liquor bars and hundreds of vendors selling motorcycle gear and accessories. At Magnolia Avenue and Fifth Street, Drill Team Performances by Clermont, Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando Harley-Davidson, Precision Thunder, Florida Gulf Coast Harley Owners Group, the Independent Motorcycle Skill Team and the Central Florida Motorcycle current IDTF World Champions. Biker Games are will also be on going through the entire weekend.

Free parking will be provided in a number of locations throughout downtown. In addition, many local not-for-profit organizations will be conducting their fundraising efforts throughout the weekend by offering parking in various lots throughout town.
