TAVARES — Lake County Attorney Sandy Minkoff was recently selected to Florida Trend’s “Florida Legal Elite,” which is an annual edition that recognizes the top attorneys in the state as chosen by members of the Florida Bar.
It is the second consecutive year Minkoff has been selected for the honor. Of the 1,170 attorneys that earned recommendations of their peers in the 2008 edition of “Florida Legal Elite,” 62 represented government agencies and only 11 of these worked for county offices.
“We try to work hard by providing quality legal work, and we don’t get involved in policy decisions,” Minkoff said.
Perhaps one of the smallest government attorney’s offices to be recognized on the list, the Lake County Attorney’s Office includes only three other attorneys: Deputy County Attorney Melanie Marsh, Attorney Erin Hartigan and Attorney Sarah Rissman.
“Having a smaller office makes us well rounded,” Minkoff said. “You can’t specialize in just one area. The County is much larger and we are involved in more types of services, so the pace is much faster.”
During Minkoff’s tenure as County Attorney, the office has added only one additional attorney. While the work performed in the County Attorney’s Office is far more diverse and greater than a decade ago, Minkoff prides his office’s ability to use as little as possible of outside counsel, which helps save County taxpayers money and provides easier access for County officials.
“Fortunately, we’ve had such a good County Commission,” Minkoff said. “If you look back through the years, the commissioners have been excellent to work with.”
