TAVARES — Before heading off in the morning, Lake County motorists can take a peek at the current traffic conditions on U.S. Highway 441, County Road 561 and State Road 19 courtesy of Lake County’s five new traffic cameras.
The Lake County Department of Public Works, Road Operations Division, unveiled online this week a new traffic camera system. The five cameras are located at the intersections of county roads 561 and 448, along U.S. Highway 441 at State Road 19, Lake Eustis Drive and St. Clair Abrams Avenue, and State Road 19 and Main Street.
While Web surfers can regularly check on traffic conditions through the Web, the cameras will ultimately benefit the Road Operations Division by assisting with monitoring traffic signalization.
“The purpose of why we bought these cameras is if we have a problem with a signal, we can remotely look at the traffic patterns of the intersection,” said Kristian Swenson, Director of the Road Operations Division.
Working in tandem with additional software that remotely controls traffic signals, staff from the Road Operations Division can make adjustments to signals if there is visual evidence that warrants such a change. The five cameras are located in Tavares, near the Division’s traffic operations facility.
“Right now these cameras are close to our facility, but ultimately we want to have them in remote locations to reduce travel and troubleshooting time,” Swenson said.
