Mount Plymouth and Sorrento design workshop scheduled for April 29 is cancelled; to be scheduled for a later date

RELEASE DATE: April 26, 2006

TAVARES — Lake County Government officials decided Wednesday to reschedule a design workshop for the communities of Mount Plymouth and Sorrento, which was originally slated for Saturday, April 29.

The rescheduling will allow Lake County planning staff to focus their attention on several proposed projects for the area. The new date for the design workshop will be determined by the Mount Plymouth Sorrento Planning Advisory Committee at its scheduled meeting on Wednesday, May 10, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Sorrento Christian Center, located at 32441 N. County Road 437.

“It is important we have the attention of the committee, staff and citizens to focus on the design concepts for the main street district of these two distinct Lake County communities,” said Carol Stricklin, AICP, Director of the Lake County Department of Growth Management.

At its Tuesday meeting, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners approved a request to delay two residential rezoning requests in the Sorrento area. The cases will be considered by the Board on Tuesday, May 2, at 2 p.m. in the Lake County Administration Building, 315 W. Main St., Tavares.

When rescheduled for next month, the design workshop will explore design standards and guidelines for the “main street” district of the Mount Plymouth and Sorrento communities. The planning at this event will be used as a reference in creating new land development regulations for the Mount Plymouth and Sorrento “main street” district.

The workshop is one of many recent public meetings to shape how the two distinct communities of Mount Plymouth and Sorrento grow in the future. In 2001, Lake County hired a consultant to conduct a study of the two communities. After many focus groups, workshops and meetings, three of the resulting recommendations were to:

  • Form a community advisory group to continue to provide recommendations to the Board
  • Study and develop policies for the County’s Comprehensive Plan and Future Land Use Map
  • Establish design standards and guidelines

The Board of County Commissioners created the Mount Plymouth Sorrento Planning Advisory Committee in October 2004. This year the advisory committee came to an agreement on policies to guide future growth in the community. The policies created three overlay districts: rural, suburban and main street.
