Tavares’ Art in the Square exhibit to celebrate Latin Heritage

RELEASE DATE: May 8, 2006

TAVARES — The City of Tavares will celebrate Latin Heritage with its monthly Art in the Square exhibit beginning with an opening reception on Friday, May 12, at 5:30 p.m. at Tavares City Hall, 201 E. Main St.

The art exhibit will feature the work of four renowned Colombian artists. Guests at the opeing reception can view and purchase this artwork while listening to the sounds of Trio Armonia Diferentes performing from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers and Huellas Flamenca performing a fiery Flamenco show from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. in the council chambers.

Artists appearing at this month’s Art in the Square exhibit include:

Gabriel Puyana — This glass artist learned in Colombia to appreciate the exacting detailing of classic architecture. His passion led him to study the subject, first at Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture, and then at Pratt Institute in New York, where he received a master’s degree in tropical architecture. His art is reflective of his early education and can readily be recognized in his 3-foot tall glass buildings that he likes to refer to as Utopian Glass Architecture. He has won numerous prestigious awards and has completed commissions for Universal Studios in Florida, the New York Botanical Gardens, the Metropolitan Opera Gallery at Lincoln Center in New York, Mayor’s Jewelers, Godiva Chocolates and other private collectors nationwide.

Luz Maria de Cote — Since childhood she has had a passion for painting. She began her early studies at the art school of Efrain Martinez in Popayan, Colombia. After high school, she graduated with a degree in Art from the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, where she studied diverse techniques in painting and in etching. Later, in Cali, Colombia, she studied for five years in the Instituto de Cultura Popular and in the Escuela de Bellas Artes, studying the human figure, graphic arts, sculpture and diverse painting techniques. She has since exhibited at several shows in many countries and has participated in “Lizart Lizard” for the City of Orlando Public Arts program and in “Swanstation” for the City of Lakeland. She recently painted a large mural for Florida Hospital Waterman in Orlando for the Oncology Department.

Maria Arenas —From 1980 to 1983, she studied emphasis in human figures and calligraphy at the prestigious David Manzur Academy in Bogotá, Colombia, then studied the artist Bodegones (light and shadow composition), for two years in the Fernando Davila Academy. She holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a master’s degree in education. Her current media is oil on wood, and she has participated in several solo shows in prestigious art galleries in Bogotá.

Susana Soto Penagos — Born in Colombia, she received her bachelor’s degree in interior design, with a major in fine arts. Her passion in painting has always nourished her spirit, and through her art education, she has explored various mediums in painting such as pastel, oil, acrylic and watercolor. At an early age, she started drawing portraits and human figures in charcoal, and later began drawing in pastel. She enjoys painting portraits, landscapes and murals.
