TAVARES — Beginning Wednesday, July 1, a new bus route for LakeXpress will begin operating from the Altoona Post Office on State Road 19 to the community of Zellwood on U.S. Highway 441 where passengers can transfer to LYNX route 44.
The new Umatilla to Zellwood route is the fourth route for LakeXpress, and it will be free to ride for an introductory period until July 31.
To celebrate the new route, a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for July 1 at 9 a.m. at Cadwell Park, located at 4 Cassady St. in Umatilla. Speaking at the ceremony are Lake County Commission Chairman Welton Cadwell, Umatilla Mayor Benita Dixon, Umatilla Council President Holly Curley and T.J. Fish, Executive Director of the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization.
Routes 1 and 2 opened in May 2007. Route 1 runs from The Villages to Eustis, primarily on U.S. Highway 441 and Route 2 circulates in downtown Leesburg. Route 3, which circulates in downtown Mount Dora, opened in July 2008.
LakeXpress operates Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Fares for LakeXpress are $1 for all trips. Half-fares are available for riders 60 years or older, students and individuals with disabilities (buses are equipped with lifts). Free fares are available for children under five years of age, who are accompanied by a fare-paying chaperone.
