Finding a peaceful get-away isn’t always an easy endeavor. Take away television, telephones and insert the quaint setting of a New England-style downtown overlooking a picturesque lake, and the Historic Mount Dora Inn has the recipe for a relaxing vacation.
Innkeepers Lindsay and Nancy Richards purchased the former antique store in 1996 and converted it into a bed and breakfast. In their ninth year of business, the couple has hosted more than 13,000 guests in the Historic Mount Dora Inn.
“When our guests come here they just want peace and quiet, and to get away from the rat race,” Nancy said.
With four rooms each with its own private bath, the inn offers a quiet atmosphere that is within walking distance of the popular downtown of Mount Dora. Originally built in 1886, antiques from the era adorn each elegantly appointed room.
“A lot of guys come in and see there is no TV,” Nancy said. “They act like they’re not going to make it, but they end up liking it.”
Couples find the relaxed atmosphere provides the perfect opportunity to reconnect as the bed and breakfast is a popular spot for those celebrating anniversaries. Lynn reading one guest’s submitted comment says it all, “You changed my husband into the man I married. I hope he stays this attentive after we get back to the real world.”
Downtown Mount Dora offers a variety of activities including shopping at antique, craft and specialty shops, choosing between a host of gourmet restaurants; and taking a ride aboard a train, boat or a horse-drawn carriage. Beside the other surrounding draws of annual festivals and art galleries, the bed and breakfast features a full gourmet breakfast.
The five-course meal is served family style with all inn guests gathering at one table to share some home-cooked delicacies such as apple butter or oven-baked French toast. The breakfast became such a popular feature of the bed and breakfast, Lindsay developed a cookbook. More than 3,000 of the books have sold.
While the Mount Dora Historic Inn is open all year, October through May is the busy season. Christmas time is one of the most popular as Mount Dora is all sparkling with Christmas lights and sleigh bells. For the holidays and other local festivals, such as the art festival, guests often make reservations more than a year in advance.
