With 14 quaint cities each with a population of no more than 15,000 there isn’t much in Lake County, Fla., that is gigantic.

The exception to the rule is the 117-acre conglomerate of flea, farmer’s and antique markets perched atop a hill on the side of U.S. Highway 441 in Mount Dora. Renninger’s Florida Twin Markets is not only big it is arguably the largest of its kind in the Southeast.

Between the two markets — one is the antique center and the other the flea and farmer’s market — Renninger’s offers acres of indoor and outdoor shopping potential.

The 40,000-square-foot antique center is air conditioned with some merchant booths arranged into a charming village of shops. Each weekend, there are more than 150 individual antique dealers that oversee separate shops on the premise.

In addition, hordes of antiques collectors and dealers come from all over the nation for 11 special weekends at Renninger’s. Every third weekend of the month (except December) an antique fair brings about 400 total dealers.

For those premier antique hunters, antique extravaganzas hosted on the third week of January, February and November brings an estimated 1,400 dealers to Renninger’s. The extravaganzas are the largest antique shows in the state as more than 40,000 people will shop during the three-day event.

Every weekend from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Renninger’s flea and farmer’s market host about 700 merchants. The indoor facility offers fresh produce, seafood, groceries, crafts and other goods. Outside vendors feature plants and other merchandise.

Boasting hundreds of vendors and thousands of customers each weekend is just the beginning of exciting events at the markets. In February, a Civil War re-enactment is staged on the market grounds. More than 800 participants play the roles of Union and Confederate soldiers as market visitors stroll through the Civil War encampments.

The new event, a Classic Car and Motorcycle Swap, is hosted on the second weekend of every month. From street rods to Harleys, hundreds show up for the entertainment, food and, of course, the shopping.
