Lake County Library System’s free summer reading program to feature “A universe of stories”

RELEASE DATE: May 16, 2019

Tavares – The Lake County Library System will kick off its annual summer program for children, teens and adults. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories,” celebrating space and science.

The program runs from June to July with more than 1,000 free events and activities open to the public. Lake County is proud to offer a wide range of programs including, live science shows, interactive planetariums, coding camps, visits from the 501st Legion of Star Wars storm troopers, magic shows, sci-fi movie nights, videogame tournaments, tech classes and more.

“Our libraries have evolved so much over the years,” said Linda Goff, Youth Services Coordinator for the Lake County Library System. “We encourage everyone to visit. This summer’s programs are out of this world!”

The reading portion of the program also serves as a great way to keep young minds active and help prevent a “summer slide” in academic performance. Kids and teens can earn prizes and gift cards in the reading competition, and adults can enter raffles for grand prizes.

In addition, the East Lake County Library in Sorrento and W.T. Bland Public Library in Mount Dora have teamed up with the Second Harvest Food Bank to provide free meals for children over the summer. The Fruitland Park Public Library will also serve kids meals donated by the Kiwanis Club of Lady Lake.

The Lake County Library System is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning through a cooperative countywide library system, engaging the community by offering physical and digital content, and offering services critical to education, research and workforce training.
