Sports events this weekend in Lake County include Olympic Qualifying Swim Meet and High School Volleyball State Championships

RELEASE DATE: April 28, 2021

Tavares – Lake County will host two high-profile sporting events this weekend. The 2021 UANA Tokyo Olympics Swimming Qualifier will take place Thursday, April 29 – Sunday, May 2 at the Orlando Health National Training Center in Clermont, and the SSAC High School Girls Beach Volleyball State Championships will take place Thursday, April 29 – Saturday, May 1 at Hickory Point Beach in Tavares.

“We are excited to host not one but two sports events in Lake County this weekend,” said Lake County Commissioner and Tourist Development Council Chairman Doug Shields. “We are honored to be seen as a premiere sporting destination by our neighbors and international partners as events like these are economic drivers for our community. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all visiting families and fans.”

2021 UANA Tokyo Olympics Swimming Qualifier

The 2021 UANA Tokyo Olympics Swimming Qualifier is hosted in partnership with Azura Aquatics, Montverde Aquatic Club, Lake County, Orlando Health National Training Center and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission. This event will provide a long-awaited opportunity for Olympians and Olympic hopefuls to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics as well as the 2021 Junior Pan American Games scheduled to be held in Cali, Colombia, this September.

“The Orlando Health National Training Center is honored to host this prestigious event,” said Paul Johns, Chief Operations Officer of Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. “For nearly 20 years, we have served athletes from the Lake County community and around the country at our facility. This is an exciting time, and we look forward to hosting international and national athletes as we head into Olympics season.”

“On behalf of our partners at Visit Lake, Montverde Academy, and Orlando Health National Training Center, we are honored to welcome the 2021 UANA Tokyo Olympics Swimming Qualifier to our community,” said Jason Siegel, President & CEO of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission. “We are thrilled to host and support these Olympians and Olympic hopefuls on their journey to compete for gold. The National Training Center will provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere, and we are confident the athletes and coaches will have a wonderful experience in Lake County.”

As UANA is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for the athletes, coaches and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, tickets will not be sold to the public for the event, but a live stream broadcast will be available. Information regarding the live stream and event schedule can be found at UANA-Aquatics.com.

SSAC High School Girls Beach Volleyball State Championships

Also this weekend, the Sunshine State Athletic Conference (SSAC) will welcome high school teams from around the state to compete in the SSAC High School Girls Beach Volleyball State Championships. The state championship is hosted in partnership with the Florida Region of USA Volleyball and Lake County.

“We look forward to another great high school beach volleyball state championship event this weekend at Hickory Point Beach.”, stated Steve Bishop, Executive Director & President for the Florida Region of USA Volleyball.  “This is our fourth annual event with Sunshine State Athletics and we applaud their leadership for launching high school beach volleyball in Florida back in 2017.  We’re currently only one of two states in the US with sanctioned high school beach volleyball.  The sport has grown each year and we expect this year’s championships to be the most competitive thus far.  We welcome the teams and their families to Lake County and we invite volleyball fans to come and enjoy the competition.”

"The SSAC is excited to be partnered again this year with the Florida Region of USAV for our 2021 Girls Beach Volleyball State Championships at Hickory Point Beach. This will be our fourth championship event with the Florida Region of USAV, and we couldn't ask for better partners" stated SSAC President Stuart Weiss. "Their organization is a class act from top to bottom! Hickory Point Beach is truly a championship caliber facility and our teams and players will truly enjoy the amazing courts over the two-day event. We appreciate Lake County's hospitality and hope to see everyone on the beach this weekend!"
