Emergency Management Training
The Office of Emergency Management is involved in numerous community events and training opportunities throughout Lake County. Lessons learned from the 2004 hurricane season, the deadly 2007 Groundhog Day Tornadoes and various large-scale events hosted each year demonstrate the need for on-going coordination and training among Lake County’s responsible stakeholders.
To learn more about the emergency management profession, our office suggests FEMA’s Professional Development Series (PDS). The Professional Development Series includes seven Emergency Management Institute independent study courses (all courses are on line) that provide a well-rounded set of fundamentals for those in the emergency management profession. National Incident Management System (NIMS)
After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the Secretary of Homeland Security at the request of the President developed the National Incident Management System (NIMS). The National Incident Management System, or NIMS as it is frequently called, integrates effective practices in emergency preparedness and response into a comprehensive national framework for incident management. The NIMS enables responders at all levels and disciplines to work together more effectively to manage domestic incidents no matter what the cause, size or complexity. The benefits of the NIMS are significant:
- Standardized organizational structures, processes and procedures;
- Standards for planning, training and exercising, and personnel qualification standards;
- Interoperable communications processes, procedures and systems;
- Information management systems; and
- Supporting technologies – voice and data communications systems, information systems, data display systems and specialized technologies.
The requirements of the NIMS call for all levels of government to support NIMS implementation by completing several awareness courses. Emergency Management encourages all County and municipal employees, employees of non-profit organizations and support agencies, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) staff and personnel within any organization (governmental or private sector) responsible for the response, recovery and mitigation of local incidents to complete the following Independent Study courses through FEMA:
