New Volunteer Program Launches Online Portal
Posted: November 24, 2010

The Department of Employee Services has been hard at work developing an all new Volunteer Program. Department staff recently unveiled a new online portal at http://www.lakecountyfl.gov/volunteer, which offers potential volunteers an online list of available volunteer opportunities with Lake County Government, along with an application form that can be completed and submitted electronically. The listing and application form make it easy to see the variety of opportunities available and helps facilitate the volunteer process.

The goal of the new volunteer program is to look for those who are willing to use their knowledge, vigor, expertise and desire to benefit Lake County and themselves through volunteering. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit a volunteer application via e-mail, (jnelson@lakecountyfl.gov), fax (352) 343-9883, by mail or in person to 315 W. Main St., Tavares, FL 32778.

Employees interested in volunteering can do so for another constitutional office, or for the Board of County Commissioners, as long as the duties performed are different from those of their regular job. Employees are also encouraged to become an advocate of the Volunteer Program, by sharing this volunteer opportunity information with friends and neighbors.

A sampling of the available volunteer opportunities includes:

  • Courtesy Shuttle Operator (Golf Cart)
  • Parking Garage Citizen Information
  • Receptionist
  • Welcome Center Greeter
  • Animal Shelter Helper
  • Water Resource Management Laboratory Assistant
  • Horticultural Learning Center Assistant
  • Adult Literacy Tutor
  • Library Volunteer Aide
  • Photography Assistant
  • Woodworking Assistant
  • Maintenance Inventory Assistant

“Lake County has a proud history of volunteerism,” said Jeannine Nelson, Employee Services Specialist. “Many of our past volunteers have won prestigious awards.” Volunteers are recognized through the President’s Volunteer Service Award program, a national recognition program with criteria based on the number of hours volunteered during the year. For 2010, seventy (70) individuals received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for volunteer service to various Lake County agencies.

For more information about volunteer opportunities, or to find out how you can add a volunteer opportunity for your Department, call (352) 343-9596, e-mail jnelson@ lakecountyfl.gov or log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov/ volunteer.
